The Rockwood neighborhood of Spokane contains some of the oldest and grandest homes in the region. This one is certainly no exception. The Victor & Georges Dessert House (pronounced like Desert) is a landmark Spanish Eclectic estate perched on one of Spokane’s most striking South Hill sites. Designed by renowned architect G.A. Pehrson, who also contributed to the historic Davenport Hotel, this residence stands as a testament to timeless artistry and craftsmanship.

The home is listed on both the National and Spokane Registers of Historic Places and represents a rare architectural treasure. Construction began in 1913 and was completed in 1936. The magnificent basalt rock terraces and curvilinear walls give the home its fortress-like presence, creating a dramatic stage for the 7,500 square foot residence above.

Inside, the grand curved staircase spirals upward beneath open stringing and an embellished wave design — one of the home’s most beloved features. Decorative wrought iron appears throughout: on gates, balcony railings, bookshelves, and even custom cabinet doors in the kitchen. The kitchen offers dual ovens and dishwashers, a warming oven, wine cooler, a large granite island, and an undercounter beverage fridge — all thoughtfully integrated to create a refined space for effortless entertaining and intimate meals.

The main living areas showcase elegant archways.. and period touches that blend historic integrity with warmth. The dining room features curved walls and a floating ceiling, adorned in Martinique banana-leaf wallpaper — the same design created in 1942 for the Beverly Hills Hotel, honoring the period of the home. The adjacent rounded breakfast room is lined with windows that frame a breathtaking panorama, making it one of the home’s most cherished spots. Another unique space is “the Beehive room” which hosts a built-in fireplace and Moroccan tile floors. All of the main floor areas allow for easy walk-out access to the spacious entertaining terraces.

The spacious main bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with walk in glass shower and a private balcony overlooking the city. The home also has a large wine cellar — and five unique bathrooms. One of the most surprising delights is the recently remodeled main-floor powder room. Rather than replace the original vintage sink and toilet, the new design celebrates them. Bold Gucci Heron print wallpaper transformed the room into a whimsical, joyful jewel box. It has become a favorite among guests.

The Dessert House has stood for nearly a century as a private, artful retreat — a place where history and imagination meet.
